Book Beginnings is a book meme hosted by Rose City Reader where participants share the first sentence (or so) of the book, along with initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.
The Friday 56 is hosted by Freda’s Voice, and the rules are quite simple: Grab a book, any book, turn to page 56 or 56% in your e-reader. Find any non-spoilery sentence(s) and post.
This week’s book:
FBI agents Jessica Harlow and John Shepherd have a past. The former lawyer and cocky Army ranger clashed during their training at Quantico, gladly going their separate ways after graduating from the Academy. Six years later, the last thing either of them expects is to run into each other again–assigned to work as partners in a high-profile undercover sting.
For both of them, being paired with a former rival couldn’t come at a worse time. Recently divorced from a Hollywood producer and looking for a fresh start, Jessica is eager to prove herself at her new field office. And John is just one case away from his dream assignment to the FBI’s elite Hostage Rescue Team. In order to nail a corrupt Florida politician, they’ll have to find a way to work as a team–a task that becomes even trickier when they’re forced to hole up at a romantic, beachfront resort as part of the investigation. Suddenly, the heat behind their nonstop sparring threatens to make the job a whole lot more complicated.
BOOK BEGINNINGS:
Three minutes after the plane took off from the runway, FBI Special Agent John Shepherd knew he was doomed if he didn’t act immediately. Next to John, the guy in the middle seat was in his early forties and dressed in a suit and lime-green shirt. “Man, it’s a packed flight tonight.” He held out his hand in introduction. “Steve Fox. Corporate motivational speaker, leadership consultant, and occasional author. When I can motivate myself to write, that is.” He laughed at his own joke. “So . . . you heading to the Windy City for business or pleasure?”
FRIDAY 56:
Blair stopped just inches from her, the edge of his briefcase rubbing against her leg. His voice dipped lower, turning coy. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were trying to see me again.” Mindful of her obligations to play nice as part of the sting op, Jessica feigned a smile in return. “That’s just a bonus, Mr. Mayor.” He boldly held her gaze before turning and heading toward the door, as if this were all part of some cat-and-mouse game between them. Which it was, of course. Except the mouse hadn’t yet realized who was who.
MY THOUGHTS:
Today I chose a book I have already read and love, its actually one of my top favourite books so far in 2017. Julie James is an amazing author. She writes with meticulous care, everything is well researched. And if you're interested in finding out how FBI Special Agents Jessica and John catch corrupt Blair the Mr. Mayor, read this book now! I have also written a review of it, click here to check it out.
There is something so intriguing to me about FBI novels. I have never read one of James' books before and I will have to check them out. Thanks for introducing this one to me. :)

DeleteHi Priyanka,
ReplyDeleteNice review and 'Friday Linkups' posts. However, as much as I enjoy a good, supenseful thriller, I suspect that Julie adds just a touch too much romance to her storylines for my liking.
Thanks for sharing though and I hope that you are enjoying your current read :)
Yvonne
