Book Beginnings is a book meme hosted by Rose City Reader where participants share the first sentence (or so) of the book, along with initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.
The Friday 56 is hosted by Freda’s Voice, and the rules are quite simple: Grab a book, any book, turn to page 56 or 56% in your e-reader. Find any non-spoilery sentence(s) and post.
This week’s book:
Wealthy businessman Gabriel Bishop rules the boardroom with the same determination and ruthlessness that made him a rock star on the rugby field. He knows what he wants, and he’ll go after it no-holds-barred.
And what he wants is Charlotte Baird.
Charlotte knows she’s a mouse. Emotionally scarred and painfully shy, she just wants to do her job and remain as invisible as possible. But the new CEO—a brilliant, broad-shouldered T-Rex of a man who growls and storms through the office, leaving carnage in his wake—clearly has other plans. Plans that may be equal parts business and bedroom.
If Charlotte intends to survive this battle of wits and hearts, the mouse will have to learn to wrangle the T-Rex. Game on.
BOOK BEGINNINGS:
Charlotte closed the final updated folder with a smile. Pushing back from her desk after shutting down her computer, she stretched to loosen up the kinks, then decided to visit the restroom before heading out to catch the 6:15 bus home. It was a good bet it’d be blissfully empty this late on a Saturday since most people were coming into the city while she was heading in the opposite direction.
“I can’t work late on the fourteenth.”
Gabriel raised an eyebrow. “Ervin?”
“Ernest. And yes.” When he snorted, she’d had it. Slamming down her tub of ice cream, she glared at him. “He’s a very good friend, and since you know nothing about him, I’d appreciate it if you kept your opinions to yourself!”
Gabriel’s eyes—that steely gray that could almost be silver when he laughed—glinted. “You’re dating him and you still call him a friend?”
So maybe it was a teensy bit her fault he thought she was still dating Ernest.
